Culture and Heritage
Between Lille and Valenciennes, near Belgium and located in the heart of the Scarpe-Escaut Regional Nature Park, Saint-Amand-les-Eaux is the only spa resort in the Hauts-de-France. Undeniably, when you discover Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, it is the Abbey Tower which, from the height of its 82 meters, immediately catches the eye! Vestige of the powerful Benedictine abbey founded by the monk Amand, the abbey tower, former entrance of the abbey church, was built from 1626 to 1640 under the abbot Nicolas Dubois. A jewel of regional heritage with its lush and unique architecture, it has been the subject of a colossal restoration project. Inside, there is a museum displaying collections of faience from Amandine and temporary exhibitions constantly renewed. While at its peak, the melodies of the 48 carillon bells dating from 1640 still resonate in the city.
Hiking
On foot or by bike, hikers find at the start of the spa town, marked trails leading to the discovery of the forest of Raismes-Saint-Amand-Wallers and its treasures: paved droves of Wallers-Arenberg, pond to Goriaux, Mining Site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. While the pilgrims take the way of Saint-Jacques de Compostela which crosses it.
Leisure and entertainment
Behind its flower city label (3 flowers) hides a cultural, sportif and associative intense life. The Pasino (new generation casino) is a remarkable leisure and cultural complex. The Théâtre des Sources hosts a varied program. Bowling, intercommunal aquatic center and cinema complete the leisure offer. Don't forget, the river port of La Porte du Hainaut and its refurbished downtown, encouraging the stroll and relaxation. Near Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, the Leisure and Nature Park of La Porte du Hainaut in Raismes offers many activities in an exceptional setting on the edge of the forest.
Highlights
Among the highlights, we can remember the feast of the Fluvial Port; the flower market; the horse show; the National Day; the European Heritage Days; the navel festival and the Christmas festivities ... Every Friday morning, the market animates the city center.
Gastronomy
Beer lovers will be delighted with local discoveries: the abbey, the Germinal, Choulette, the Porte du Hainaut, the Biloute, or the Belle Rose, ... The list is long! To discover also the cake Germinal (biscuit chocolate sponge cake, chicory pavé, chocolate mousse) proposed by the pastry chefs of Hainaut, as well as the Craquelin specially designed on Thursday Saint by the confectioners amandinois. Without forgetting the language of Lucullus, famous culinary specialty of Valenciennes. Notice to gourmands!
