Culture and heritage
Founded on the sand forty years ago, the Grande Motte enjoys an international reputation today ...
In 2010, La Grande Motte obtained the "Heritage of the twentieth century" label granted by the Ministry of Culture. For the first time in the history of this distinction, the whole city is dedicated. The work of Jean Balladur, chief architect, with La Grande Motte, represented a major milestone in modern universal seaside architecture.
Jean Balladur, after thirty years of hard work, has come to impose his design: to make La Grande Motte a sustainable city, where architecture is at the service of the human.
By visiting the city, you will face its full dimension and its esotericism. It evokes both the pre-Columbian pyramids of Teotihuacan in Mexico and the dialogue between Yin and Yang.
The architect-philosopher used concrete as an artistic medium to produce variable forms. By reversing and repeating itself on the facades, his motifs create a rhythm and identity specific to each building. Jean Balladur has also hidden symbols and philosophical senses to discover ...
Heritage of the twentieth century: La Grande Motte surprises and leaves speechless visitors ....
Here, the feminine of the Couchant meets the masculine Levant, light and shadow play on the facades of buildings to the purist geometry of modern architecture.
True work of art of Jean Balladur, visionary architect, La Grande Motte is a unique city, endowed with a living architectural heritage.
But it is also a garden city: La Grande Motte is a small commune from the point of view of its surface, less than 12 km² ... Of which 8 km² of green spaces and natural areas! This is exceptional !
Traditions
In all seasons, the traditions of the South are alive,
popular, colorful, and many feasts.
Traditional events reveal the identity of this Occitan land.
They combine legends, religion, folklore and conviviality in a happy marriage of genres: tradition of Languedoc contests, bullfights, ferries, carnivals and popular festivals.
The Pentecost Fair in Nimes is one of the most important feria in France from the point of view of affluence. The famous arenas of Nîmes host a cartel of high-level bullfighting games and the streets of the cities are invested by festayres from all over southern Europe.
In Arles, the tradition is celebrated!
Gardian's Day, Election of the Queen of Arles, Satin Race, Pegoulado, Costume Festival ... Gardians, Arlésiennes, Camargue horses are the actors of all the traditional festivals that mark the seasons of the Pays d'Arles.
Wine and gastronomy
Get ready to treat yourself as there is a long and strong gastronomic tradition. It is based on exceptional local know-how and noble products: Camargue salt, Bouzigues oyster, Lucques olive from Languedoc, Camargue rice.
The Mediterranean coast will brighten up your taste buds with Nîmes cod brandade, macaronade (a traditional Sète specialty, made of pasta and bragesoles) or bull gardiane. And of course, everyone knows the age of Sète, not to mention the small Pâté de Pezenas, a regional specialty steeped in history.
Land of vineyards, this region produces wines of high quality.
The Mediterranean region, from the Nîmes region to Roussillon, is a champion in the field with about fifty appellations (AOC Languedoc, AOC Corbières, ...): they are distributed in Gard and Hérault (Montpeyroux, Faugères, Pic Saint Loup , ....)
Natural Sweet Wines are also a specialty of the South of France; they are produced mainly on arid soils in a warm and dry Mediterranean climate and come from Muscat grape varieties (Muscat de Lunel, Muscat de Frontignan, Muscat de Mireval ...). This region is a very beautiful oenotouristic destination.
